You've decided to prepare your family in the event of an emergency. One of the items on your list of Things to Do: Purchase a food storage supply. It sounds like an easy task, but appearances can be deceiving. There are many food storage suppliers out there. Once you've done a basic search, you may get overwhelmed with information.
All food storage products are not created equally. There are some food storage products that will last forever, but taste about as delicious as the cardboard box used to store them. Then, there are some food storage products that taste wonderful! But, they only last a number of months before expiring and becoming useless in your food storage supply. Before you make an investment in your food storage, it is important to identify the products that taste great but also have a reasonable shelf-life.
What are the most important questions to ask?
• What does the product taste like? Taste is important! In the face of a disaster, wouldn't it be nice to know that you have some familiar and delicious food to rely on? So, make a point of trying the product before you add it to your food storage plan! We've created our new everyday size cans for this reason (and to make it easier to rotate through your food storage). Augason Farms' products taste so good that we sometimes find it difficult not to raid our own food storage!
• How long will the product last? Certain products are packaged in such a way that they will last several years. Some products may only last approximately a year. When you are checking a product's shelf life, make sure you know how it is packaged (is it canned or bagged?) and make sure you know how it should be stored (directly on the ground, away from water). The shelf life is listed on all of our products. Our #10 cans range from 10 years up to 30 years!
• How many people will this product feed? Some products, like MRE's, will last a lifetime. But, they don't taste great and they feed only one person. Make sure that you've accounted for each person in your family and know that the product you're purchasing will feed them all.
